Worldwide, about 285 million people are visually impaired, yet 80% of visual impairment and blindness is treatable.
ACCESS Health International works to improve eye care in low and middle income countries. India has pioneered implementation of high quality, low cost eye care, including low cost cataract surgeries, eye camps, and affordable glasses for schoolchildren. ACCESS Health works with leading providers of high quality eye care services in India, both to learn from them and to support and contribute to their vision of ending preventable blindness. ACCESS Health launched a program in 2013 designed to support practitioner to practitioner learning and the implementation of high quality, cost effective eye care programs from India to Morocco. ACCESS Health is also creating a handbook to help other countries emulate the Indian success in eye care.

ACCESS Health India brings together some of the largest eye care hospitals in the country to adopt good practices shown to improve the efficiency and the effectiveness of eye care services.

Eye care in India provides one of the best examples of how excellent healthcare can be both accessible and affordable. Although the prevalence of blindness in the population decreased from about 1.5 percent in 1973 to just slightly over one percent in 2007, India still has a large burden of blindness. Of a total population exceeding one billion, as many as fifteen million are blind, and an additional fifty two million are visually impaired, due to cataracts, refractive errors, glaucoma, and other causes. Unique models for high quality, low cost care exist in India and have inspired eye care providers around the world. Despite these excellent systems of eye care, only a fraction of the population in India benefits from these services.
