ACCESS Health’s Sofia Widén interviews Magdalena Marklund in a study that identifies best practices and areas for improvement in the Swedish elder care system. Marklund is a former program manager for Sweden’s Technology for the Elderly program.

Technology for the Elderly was a large government program run by the Swedish Institute of Assistive Technology. The program provided products and services that helped the elderly and people with disabilities to maintain accessible living. The program also used technology to support informal caregivers. Innovations in technology enable an aging population to live at home, in comfort, with the support they need.

With the development of programs such as Technology for the Elderly, Swedish elder care has evolved from placing elderly in care homes to providing them with support to live in their own homes as long as possible.
