“The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) represents the healthcare delivery component of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Today, the VHA operates one of the largest healthcare systems in the world. In this interview with ACCESS Health researcher Jean Galiana, Erik Langhoff and Angela Laurio describe the institution and the groundbreaking health innovations it has made in coordinated care.

The VHA is affiliated with medical schools throughout the country. Its hospitals and research facilities provide some training for approximately sixty percent of all medical residents in the United States. This relationship has made important medical advances and innovations available to the VHA. With forty percent of its patients aged 65 and older, such advances have helped the VHA provide effective elderly care. For example, Langhoff and Laurio explain how innovations in electronic medical records have improved healthcare for veterans.

As the VHA has shown, even large institutions can provide high quality care with transparent data management.”
