On December 19, 2024, the 21st Annual Health Summit of the Confederation of Indian Industries was held in New Delhi, bringing together policymakers, healthcare leaders, and industry experts to discuss India’s healthcare ambitions for 2047. The plenary session titled “Building the Backbone: Human Resources for Viksit Bharat” explored critical challenges and opportunities in strengthening India’s healthcare system. Dr. N. Krishna Reddy, CEO of ACCESS Health International, participated in the discussions, contributing to the broader dialogue on transforming healthcare delivery in India.
The discussions underscored the urgent need for India to scale its healthcare workforce to meet future demands. To achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the country will require 3.4 million physicians and 7.5 million nurses. Participants emphasized the importance of expanding educational opportunities and skill development programs to build this workforce.
Equally critical is the need to address infrastructure gaps. The summit highlighted the goal of increasing hospital bed density from the current 1.3 to 3 beds per 1,000 people, ensuring equitable access to care, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) was a central theme of the discussions, with panelists exploring its potential to ensure healthcare that is accessible, affordable, and accountable for all. Insights from the session highlighted the need for robust policy frameworks and cross-sectoral collaboration to make UHC a reality, aligning healthcare delivery with the principles of equity and inclusivity.
The summit also focused on the transformative potential of technology in healthcare. Discussions explored the integration of MedTech and artificial intelligence (AI) to address challenges such as workforce shortages and accessibility gaps. Examples included AI-driven diagnostics, telemedicine platforms, and personalized medicine, which promise to revolutionize care delivery while improving efficiency and outcomes.
Sustainability emerged as a key priority during the summit. With the healthcare sector contributing 4.4% of global net emissions, the need for environmentally responsible practices is more urgent than ever. The summit emphasized adopting green infrastructure, energy-efficient technologies, and climate-resilient practices to reduce the sector’s environmental footprint while ensuring high-quality care.
The 21st CII Annual Health Summit reaffirmed India’s commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system. The insights shared during the discussions provided a roadmap for achieving the ambitious goals of Viksit Bharat 2047.
