Origin Story

Viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B and C, remains a critical global health issue, affecting 354 million people worldwide. Despite being preventable, these viruses claim millions of lives annually, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bearing the heaviest burden. The World Health Organization (WHO) introduced strategies to eliminate hepatitis B and C by 2030, aiming for significant reductions in incidence and mortality. However, progress is slow, with only a few countries on track to meet these targets. Challenges include disparities in ACCESS to prevention, testing, and treatment, particularly in LMICs.

The Stop Hep Alliance is a global collective of organizations and individuals dedicated to the fight against viral hepatitis, with the shared goal of eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

At the heart of the Stop Hep Alliance is a commitment to comprehensive strategies that address the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care of viral hepatitis. We believe that through a multi-pronged approach, including policy advocacy, community engagement, strategies implementation, and innovative interventions, we can significantly reduce the burden of viral hepatitis worldwide.

Problem Statement(s):

Low and middle-income countries face unique challenges in combating viral hepatitis including:

  • Lack of Awareness and Education: In many of these countries, there is a significant gap in public awareness and knowledge about viral hepatitis.
  • Inadequate Healthcare Infrastructure: Many low and middle-income countries struggle with limited healthcare infrastructure, including insufficient diagnostic capabilities, treatment ACCESS, and healthcare provider training.
  • Limited Resources: The absence of adequate financing mechanisms and competing priorities impede efforts toward hepatitis elimination in numerous low- and middle-income countries.
  • High Cost of Medications: The high cost of antiviral medications remains a significant barrier in many resource-constrained settings.

Prevention Challenges: Preventive measures, such as vaccination, safe injection practices, and ACCESS to safe blood, are crucial in the fight against viral hepatitis.

Collaborative Objectives

The mission of the alliance is to support countries in developing and implementing national hepatitis action plans, advocating for increased political commitment, and mobilizing resources to ensure that elimination targets are met, all of those activities will align with the existing global effort and initiatives. By providing guidance, sharing best practices, and fostering partnerships, we strive to catalyze progress and create a world free from the suffering caused by viral hepatitis.

The primary goal is to work towards the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat.

The aim is to reduce the burden of viral hepatitis by preventing the progression of liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer associated with chronic viral hepatitis infections.

Enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with viral hepatitis is a central goal.

A fundamental goal is to ensure equitable and universal ACCESS to prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and care services for viral hepatitis, without discrimination, irrespective of gender, age, race, socioeconomic status, or geographic location.

Advocating for policy reforms, increased funding, and political commitment to prioritize viral hepatitis on national and international agendas is crucial.

The goal is to empower affected communities, healthcare workers, civil society organizations, and individuals to actively respond to viral hepatitis.

A white paper titled “Call for Cohesive Action: Redefining Cardiovascular Care in the Asia-Pacific””

This flagship Alliance report suggests that a cohesive strategy is needed to tackle CVD effectively. It challenges the myth that CVD only affects those in old age, urban, or rich populations. A cohesive strategy must be patient-centered across prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation - ultimately to achieve three outcomes: reduce premature deaths; reduce hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations, and slow growth of new CVD patients.

Key Outcomes

Policy advocacy to governments, payers, and global health institutions - organizing country dialogues in Thailand, India, Malaysia, and Korea (2024), and outreach to regional forums focused on health including APEC and ASEAN

People-centered activities - patients' voice in the center with the APAC CVD Patients' Roundtable (Oct 2024)

Launch of a regional report titled A Call for Cohesive Action: Redefining Cardiovascular Care in the Asia-Pacific (2023)

Launch of the inaugural Asia-Pacific Heart Summit (Oct 2024) to unite all workstreams together
