Addressing Climate, Gender Equity, and Public Health: Insights from a Conversation with Dr. Soumya Swaminathan

In a recent session organized by the CII Indian Women Network, Dr. Uma Aysola, Global Director of Communications & Partner Engagement at ACCESS Health International, joined Dr. Soumya Swaminathan to discuss the critical intersections of climate change, gender equity, and public health.

The discussion underscored the transformative role of digital technology in advancing climate action by reducing carbon emissions and minimizing the need for physical travel. However, the dialogue also brought attention to the health impacts of climate change, such as heat exposure, which disproportionately affects women in rural areas.

A clear call to action emerged: the need for resilient policies that prioritize vulnerable populations, particularly through inclusive workplace practices and gender-responsive frameworks.

One of the session’s key takeaways was the importance of gender representation in climate policy forums. Evidence reveals that female-led countries demonstrated more effective leadership during the COVID-19 crisis, highlighting the value of gender-sensitive approaches in policymaking and leadership.

At ACCESS Health International, we firmly believe that inclusive leadership and systemic reforms are essential to building resilient and equitable health systems. As we navigate the intertwined challenges of climate change and public health, fostering gender equity in both leadership and policy remains central to our mission.
