On October 19, 2024, the Asia-Pacific Cardiovascular Disease (APAC CVD) Alliance, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health Department of Medical Services and the National Health Security Office of Thailand, hosted the Asia-Pacific Heart Summit. This two-day event highlighted the urgent need for cohesive strategies to combat cardiovascular disease (CVD) – the leading cause of death in the region, responsible for an economic burden of approximately USD 177.8 billion annually.
A United Call to Action
The summit underscored the necessity of a multisectoral response involving governments, healthcare providers, community partners, and private sector stakeholders. Such collaboration is essential to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.4, which aims to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by one-third by 2030.
Key Recommendations
The discussions led to actionable recommendations critical to mitigating CVD’s impact:
- Raise Awareness: Enhance public understanding of CVD prevention, risk factors, and early detection through targeted campaigns.
- Cohesive National Strategies: Adopt integrated, patient-centered approaches spanning prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Sustainable Financing: Advocate for sufficient resources to ensure equitable access to quality CVD care.
- Equity in Care: Address disparities in healthcare access, particularly for vulnerable populations.
- Surveillance Systems: Implement robust data systems to inform policy and monitor progress.
- Lifestyle Interventions: Promote healthier diets, physical activity, and obesity management.
- Workforce Strengthening: Expand healthcare capacity through training, innovative delivery models, and digital health tools.
Driving Collective Impact
The APAC CVD Alliance’s flagship report, A Call for Cohesive Action: Redefining Cardiovascular Care in the Asia-Pacific, emphasizes that effective CVD management must break stereotypes, such as the misconception that it primarily affects older or affluent populations. Instead, strategies must address the disease’s diverse and widespread impact.
The Path Forward
The summit reinforced the importance of collaboration across all sectors to bend the CVD growth curve, reduce hospitalizations, and improve patient outcomes. By uniting stakeholders under a shared commitment, the region can make significant strides toward reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease and improving the quality of life for millions.
