Optimizing District Hospital Efficiency

This study aims to estimate the unit cost per visit and per hospitalization across district hospitals in India, to identify key cost drivers that impact the productivity of district hospitals focusing on improving productivity and financial sustainability. The study also assesses the adequacy of resources available at these hospitals from various sources, determining whether they sufficiently cover operational expenditures and estimate the unit cost of bed-days and hospitalizations by clinical and ancillary wards.

Program Objectives

Improving hospital efficiency and resource use by analyzing unit costs, cost drivers, and resource adequacy across district hospitals.

Estimate the unit cost per visit and hospitalization at 10 district hospitals, serving as indicators of hospital productivity, due to limited existing evidence.

Analyze the cost drivers impacting productivity in these hospitals, aiming to enhance efficiency and optimize value for money in secondary healthcare.

Assess the availability and adequacy of resources from various funding sources for hospital operations.

Determine the unit cost of bed-days and hospitalizations across clinical and ancillary wards, including key pathologies and outpatient services, for a deeper understanding of cost variations.
